RISING WOMEN EXPERTS... Every year I set the same New Years resolution and
nothing happens. How can I stick to my New Years resolutions for 2009?
By Leah Kenyon of Kenyon Coaching
Coaching is all about goal-setting and this is something that is on many
peoples’ minds as we move into 2009. I have come up with what I consider to
be my top 5 suggestions on how to create and achieve a meaningful New Years
Resolution:
1) Reflect Upon 2008 - Consider what this past year meant to you.
What did it look/feel like? What are you proud of? Now, what would you like
to be different about 2009?
2) Choose One Meaningful Goal - My challenge to you this year is to
focus your energies on one resolution. What one thing would make the biggest
difference to your life? Consider how to get the “biggest bang for your
buck” and clarify one meaningful resolution that you are going to achieve.
3) Make a Plan - Setting a New Years Resolution without making a plan
is sort of like going on a road trip without having a destination or arrival
date in mind. You don’t know where you can stop for gas, let alone how you
even know if you’re on the right road! Many people have loose resolutions of
“getting in shape”- they’ll buy a gym membership, for example, but have not
clarified what it means to “get in shape”. How do they know if they’ve
arrived? Are they in San Francisco or Timbuktu?
4) Create, Don’t “Fix” - We’ve all heard of SMART Goals and how
important it is to be realistic. Let yourself off the hook and commit to
something that is do-able, for YOU. Your resolution should be scary but not
terrifying. Set yourself up to be successful by choosing something that will
support you. You are top-dog to the resolution. Steer away from the
perspective of “fixing” yourself - you are wonderful the way you are! I’m
giving you permission to create, not fix, and please: let yourself off the
hook for hitting the gym 7 days a week at 5:30 am. Come on, people- this can
be fun!
5) Design Structures and Implement Resources - Whatever your
resolution is, you’re going to need supports. Work with a coach who will
keep you accountable to your resolution. Buddy-up with a friend who has the
same passion around their resolution as you do. Implement resources and
create the ideal environment to achieve your resolution.
