ADVICE...
What are Derma Fillers?
Ah yes! What the beauty of today’s technology has to offer...and so quickly
too. Thanks for the good question as we are all going to be one year older
at one point in 2009! There I said it. Now on to your question, here is some
general information.
Derma fillers are injectable substances used to fill in the lines, creases,
wrinkles and folds that announce themselves on our faces as we get older.
They are also used to restore or enhance the fullness of our lips.
Some of the leading derma fillers include Restylane, Perlane and Juvederm.
These fillers are gel like substances made from hyaluronic acid, which is a
naturally occurring sugar found in your body that gives our skin its volume
and moisture. Though produced naturally, the production of hyaluronic acid
slows down as we age.
Recent research is also revealing that injections of hyaluronic acid may
also play a roll in stimulating collagen production. Collagen provides our
skin its strength, flexibility and resilience, which of course degrades with
age as well contributes to those nasty wrinkles and thin, sagging skin.
The reason derma fillers are gaining more popularity in the industry of skin
rejuvenation is because they offer excellent results without the use of
surgery. The procedures take minutes to perform and aside from temporary
redness, swelling and tenderness of the skin area where the injections are
administered, there really is no down-time. You literally can take years off
your face after work on a Thursday and look stunning by Saturday night!
Now before you get too excited, not everyone will experience minimal
reactions to these products. There have been many cases where individuals
have had more severe reactions, so it is important that you request an
allergy test before diving in. Equally as important is to do a little
research on the spa or clinic you are planning to use. Are they accredited
and certified?
On a final note, unlike cosmetic surgery, derma fillers are not permanent.
For facial smoothening, the fillers last anywhere from 9 to 12 months. Lip
enhancements last form for 6 to 12 months. The cost is another factor.
Though far less of an expense of cosmetic surgery upfront, derma fillers are
a continual yearly investment and to some, so worth it.
The bottom line: How do you choose to age gracefully?
