ADVICE...
I just want to be happy, but how?
We are truly meant to be happy! So, how do we create a state of bliss - or
joy - or even start creating a feeling of basic satisfaction?
We are a society of quick fixes and immediacy. We want everything and we
want it now! Typically, when dealing with our own happiness we look for the
same “quick fix”. The most prevalent advice on how to be happy is to choose
the right attitude - an attitude of being happy just because you say it is
so. However, if you are feeling unhappy and miserable, this advice would
probably just irritate you!
So instead, we will look at a simple, but effective, three-step process.
First, identify everything that makes you unhappy. At the top of a blank
page write: “The Things I Don’t Want in My Life” and start creating your
list. For example, I don’t want to be overweight. I don’t want to be broke.
I don’t want to be in a loveless relationship. Write down everything! Spend
as much time as you need. In fact, I encourage you to walk away from the
list and come back to it later and continue the process. You will discover
by doing this that you have more things you don’t want in your life. Get it
all out on paper!
Once you have identified everything you don’t want in your life, start a new
list entitled: “All the Things I Want in My Life.” Again let your thoughts
flow. Include all areas of your life - relationships, career path, personal
time and interests, finances, personal development, spiritual growth, places
you want to travel, things you want to have, etc. Make an exhaustive list.
Again you may want to do this over the course of a few days. Allow yourself
the full freedom to dream!
Now that you have a list of everything you don’t want and a list of
everything you do want in your life; choose the top three things you will
focus on making happen differently in the upcoming week! It doesn’t matter
which list you choose from. Decide your top three priorities for the week.
Identify the specific actions you will take during the week toward becoming
happy.
Recognize your life is a journey and you are now choosing the path toward
becoming happy. The secret is to focus on one week at a time and to continue
this same process over the course of 52 weeks. You will be delighted to
experience a complete change in your “happiness”. You may even then choose
the attitude to be happy, just because you feel like it.
