How does one know they are “following their bliss”?
By Marion Smith-Olson of Soul Sifting Inc.
Many of us have heard of, and at sometime in our life may have been told
to “follow our bliss”. So what does it really mean? And would one be able to
recognize a moment of bliss?
The definition of bliss is “great happiness, feeling of intense euphoria”
towards oneself, another person or something. Most importantly it is all
about being true to yourself all the time. In order to be true to ourselves
we need to know who we are as an individual - basically what are our values,
beliefs, strengths, likes and dislikes. Following our bliss is not about
competition; it’s not about looking better or showing off. It is about
following your heart and doing what feels right to you.
What does it feel like to “follow your bliss”? Beginning this process can
sometimes feel very scary and lonely. This may be because we are finally
following our truth instead of pretending to be someone that we are not.
Following ones bliss can also be very challenging at times. This is because
there are external factors that can hinder our actions or thoughts. This in
turn can pressure us to remain in old familiar patterns that were relied
upon before. This prevents us from “following our bliss”.
What can get in the way of “following our bliss”? Some barriers include
people who have a narrow minded view of the world and they pressure an
individual to stay the way they were; or our selves using self-sabotage to
prevent a successful change that we consciously want.
To succeed, we first need to set goals and follow our inner compass. This
means following our heart and being completely truthful to our selves. We
don’t have to justify our actions or thoughts to any one - although people
or society feels that they need a justification. If we are confident in our
decision making and who we are as an individual, some people will understand
this and accept us for it, however most won’t and that is fine too.
In conclusion, to truly “follow our bliss” in life one needs to do a lot of
“soul sifting” and keep only the precious gems that liberate us and give us
permission to be a courageous and positive individual. What is stopping you
from following your true bliss?
