It’s the New Year and yes, I am ready to start my diet. Do you have
any tips to keep me on track?

January is a practically mandatory diet month. But don’t do it! Dieting
is damaging. It can reset your biological system making weight gain easier
and weight loss harder. Dieting can encourage dysfunctional thinking that
leads people into full blown eating disorders. Dieting can make feeling good
about yourself contingent on what you eat or weigh. And all the energy we
put into dieting takes energy from living our lives consciously and
purposefully.
Is it any surprise that so many people are getting depressed and overweight
in our culture that focuses on the quick external fix, instead of on the
inner work of setting our lives to rights? Setting things right includes
creating physical wellness, but from the inside out. What if we went on a
mental diet, watching all that we put in our heads from news to
conversation? So much of it is the equivalent of junk food. Just listen to
what conversation turns to – we bond over our trials and tribulations,
without tuning into appreciation for what is good in our lives. We could
shoot for the daily recommended three servings of gratitude included with
each of our meals.
What if we committed to emotional workouts, really acknowledging and
processing all that we feel for 30 minutes a day? We could build our muscles
of self- awareness, lose the weight of unresolved issues and then stretch
our feelings out of blame and anger to responsibility and peace.
What if we paid as much attention to the nutrition of our inner selves as we
do to reading the nutrients on our food packaging? Imagine planning to get
the daily recommended requirements of connection, service, solitude, rest
and purposeful, inspired action.
What if we truly sought out what our bodies needed, instead of what we could
eat and not gain weight? Our bodies talk to us every minute of every day.
Imagine listening before they are shouting at us with weight or illness.
What if we sought in our hearts the next step on our path to wellness, daily
repeating the request out loud that we want to weigh less, play more or be
happy, and then listened intently for the unique guidance for our personal
journey. This year set off on a path of weight mastery and master your life
not just control your weight.
