Rising Woman - Janet RoweWhat Concerns You? Taking a Stand on Our Health Care

By Janet Rowe of Health & Natural Lifestyles

The Journal of the American Medical Association reports that approximately 40% of the US population, or 100 million people, suffer from one or more chronic diseases. And over 180,000 people are killed annually by medical care. Research published in peer reviewed journals show:
    • The side effects of medication properly prescribed and administered was the 4th leading cause of death in America, as published by The American Medical Association Journal.
    • Nearly 100,000 Americans die each year from medical errors, according to a recent study by the Institute of Medicine.
    • Over 80,000 Americans die annually from infections that they acquire while being treated in a hospital.
    • Nearly 50% of the surgical operations in the US are unnecessary and expose patients to serious risk of injury/death.
Note: Canada is not any different than the US, it is just harder to access the statistics.

In all, what this means is that we are in a very sad health care system, and it is time to convince our government that we must make huge adjustments to our health care regime. We need to start a healthy cycle by properly educating our children about the values of foods and nutrition. They are not being taught the functionality of the human body, and how it is not designed to process nitrates, chemicals and synthetics. They are not being taught what questions to ask the doctor, or the ramifications of taking pharmaceutical drugs, as well as illicit drugs. These are the people who will be administering our health care in the very near future and it has to start here if we want to make lasting changes to our system.

I have written several letters trying to make the government aware of the cost savings in covering preventative/ complementary health care only to be told that it is not a proven method. However, it has been proven in many cases, but there is no money being spent to research alternative medicine. Vioxx, Ritalin, and many other drugs have all been pumped onto the shelves without a lot of proof or testing, but health care continues to cover them. Often these drugs have just as many side effects as they do benefits.

Alternative health care would provide astronomical savings through the prevention of disease, and unnecessary operations and hospitalization fees if made more accessible. Alternative health care such as blood analysis, kinesiology and iridology are faster, more accurate and timelier than waiting six months for a colon exam. If alternatives such as massage therapy were covered, we would have less disease from stress and other ailments. Chiropractic has also saved many people from unnecessary operations, and herbs, vitamins and homepathics have saved many people from illness, mental breakdowns, cancers, heart problems, etc. Energy balancing and vibrational medicines support the innate self regulatory and self healing capacity of the human body. Simple, complete nutrition has saved or extended the lives of many people with cancer, arthritis and more or at the very least has made life more livable. Rife treatments have effectively removed tumors and virus in cancer patients. One person here in Calgary is treating 20 doctors for cancer using Rife. So then why is it so difficult to utilize these forms of treatment?

What I find really frightening is the attitude of people with disease. They are either scared to death by what the doctor has told them and have given up hope of beating their ailments. Often people do not think that it is necessary to make changes to their lifestyle or diet. A 1993 study by the Carter Center estimated that two-thirds of deaths are due to six risk factors subject to influence by the will: tobacco, alcohol, injury risks, high blood pressure, obesity/cholesterol and poor primary care (prenatal/reproductive). Behavior greatly influences the likelihood of dying and prevention begins with awareness, so the above statistics may be of benefit in adjusting caution to dangers.

On the other hand there are many people who would like to spend the time fighting their diseases, but many are forced to work, to keep up with rent and the demands of life, even those going through chemotherapy. What a tragically sad system we have that force those who are fighting for their lives to do this. We are supposed to have freedom of choice, should this not include health care? We are being forced financially to succumb to doctors, drugs, and waiting for tests and results, all of which we are paying for whether we want to or not.

A recent story was relayed to me by one of my clients. Her friend was one of thirteen women with breast cancer; twelve of the women chose to go with the doctors recommendation of removal and chemo, the thirteenth woman chose to have removal and to use Chinese acupuncture and herbs instead of chemo. In six months the thirteenth woman went back to the doctor to get another MRI and to see how she was doing. The doctor refused to order one because she had not gone with his recommendation, until she implied taking him to the authorities. He neglected to tell her that all of the other twelve women were no longer with us. Is this freedom of choice? Doctors have been told that they will not have a job if they do not prescribe chemotherapy. So really the $250,000.00 cost of cancer treatments is political. Another client I knew had leukemia and refused chemo, so they forgot to feed him and give him fluids. Is this a humane way to pass over?

It’s time to regain our ability to choose. Help me fight for a better and more complete health care regime. Let’s all write to our new Health Minister, Iris Evans (#116B, 937 Fir Street Sherwood Park, AB T8A 4N6 -- 1-780-417-4747) to share our success stories with her and let her know that we want alternative care. Let’s prove that this is truly not just about the almighty dollar but about the value of people and our wellness.
