“I feel equal to high and splendid braveries.”
- Emily Murphy
Inspired by the achievement of five Alberta women, who fought for women’s
right to be ‘persons’ under law, The Famous 5 Foundation was
created over a decade ago.
Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney, Emily Murphy and Henrietta
Muir Edwards, forever altered the course of women’s rights the world over.
Those five women, through their valiant fight to ensure women full
participation as Canadian citizens, successfully challenged the “Persons”
Case, changing the course of history.
Those five Alberta women stand today as national heroes who campaigned for
the rights and freedoms we all enjoy today. The Famous 5 Foundation
commemorates their achievements, and strives to educate and inspire a new
generation of Albertans to build leadership capacity in every community.
The Famous 5 Foundation celebrates the legacy of these five
amazing women through our Leadership Luncheon Series. The 2007 line up
features:
May 22: Challenge the Process by Melissa Blake, Mayor -
Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
Sept 26: Create a Spirit of Community by Eva Friesen,
President and CEO, The Calgary Foundation.
Nov 22: Model the Way by Jackie Sheppard, Executive Vice
President, Corporate and Legal & Corporate Secretary for Talisman Energy.
