Ede loves colour. D. Ede loves line. D. Ede has a fascination with
faces...
...And in her paintings, she combines all three elements along with raw
emotion to produce work that speaks to the heart of the viewer.
Ede grew up in the Columbia Valley of B.C. but left, as a young woman, for
adventures elsewhere. She attended Kootenay School of Art in Nelson and
lived for some time on the West Coast. But the Valley always called to her
and eventually she, her husband and their assortment of pets, returned and
settled into Valley life.
As a youngster, Ede always loved to draw, and won many awards throughout her
schooling for her artistic endeavors. She always knew she was an artist and
was encouraged by her parents to follow that path. Drawing was as natural as
breathing to her and no matter what else changed in her life, she always
drew, covering every bit of paper, wood, fabric and whatever else she could
find, with doodles and sketches. At art school she met many other
like-minded people and enjoyed the sharing and building of creative ideas
while learning about the importance of line, colour and design. She majored
in painting and minored in pottery, graduating from the three year program.
After a bout of illness in her 20s, Ede entered what she refers to as her
“15 year painter’s block” period during which time she drew but was unable
to complete even one painting. One day, about fifteen years ago, she took to
the paint like a woman possessed, and has painted continuously since.
Originally working on masonite, Ede has, in the past several years, worked
exclusively on canvas as she finds she can get finer detail, cleaner line
and a smoother finish while utilizing the weave of the fabric.
Of her
work, Ede says, “My painting is very personal to me and I always work from
an emotional place in my soul. When I paint, I lose myself in the movement
and emotion of the idea I am trying to convey and I like to use colour to
put my feelings across. I am immensely gratified when my work touches
something in the core of another person”.
Ede works out of her small studio in Inveremre, B.C., and her work has been
featured in many solo and joint shows around B.C. and Alberta. Her paintings
hang in homes and businesses across Canada and the United States. She can be
