Tricia
Syz grew up in an oil-boom town in Central Alberta.
Long, cold winters,
a
closely knit family and small town life all left their mark and their
values. The prairie experience was deeply influential in the choices that
she makes as an artist and in her life.
As a young woman, Tricia weighed the issues that face many who choose art as
a life partner. A decision to study Graphics Arts and Visual Communications
provoked a move to the verdant west coast of British Columbia. The change of
location and program choice presented her with more scope and opportunity to
grow as an artist, but for many years that meant designing and preparing
images for commercial use.

The choice to begin painting and showing evolved after a move back to
Alberta and a first time excursion into city life in Calgary. Acceptance
into the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA), a renowned national art
group, provided the opportunity to develop technique and begin showing and
selling in local venues and in the FCA’s gallery in Vancouver. Equally
important to her was the acquiring of many friendships and acquaintances
with a large group of creative and like-minded individuals.
Out of that time grew a deep respect for the unique work of others but also
a recognition of the importance of her own process. The “City Girls” series,
that has been her focus of late, is a culmination of process and technique
but also represents the artists feeling about the city she lives in, the
life that she lives in close proximity to others, the importance of personal
relationships and a commitment to a colorful and meaningful life.
The women in the paintings are a stylized version of reality who express the
personal feeling of the artist that: “Life is
simple
if you let it be.” The subjects possess a quiet humour and are capable of
engendering a feeling of fun, relaxation, connection, and hope in their city
lives. Simply, it is the world according to Tricia Syz.
Tricia Syz is represented by Gibson Fine Art Gallery in Calgary. The gallery
