Jodie
Fergusson-Batte has been painting for 20 years, selling her first painting
at the age of 16. A self-taught artist, Jodie credits Picasso,
Dickerson and Kahlo as her key influences. This is shown in the bold lines
and exaggerated features in the majority of her figurative works.
Born in Melbourne, Australia, Jodie called many places home (including
Brisbane, Gold Coast, Darwin and most recently Sydney), before moving to
settle in the beautiful artist town of Daylesford, Victoria in 2005. Over
the past five years, Daylesford has provided limitless inspiration with its
history, seasonal beauty and the wonderful people who live in and visit the
area.
Jodie
has always had a passion for female portraiture, and relates strongly to the
expressive female form. Over the years, her style has become
easily recognizable and her works focus on capturing the essence of a woman
and a moment in her life.
As a teenager, Jodie attempted to limit her exposure to the work of other
artists for fear of becoming too heavily influenced by them. As she grew in
her own style, she began to surround herself with books and works by her
favourite artists for inspiration.
“Picasso has had a significant effect on the way that I view paintings, as
he has with many others. He had the drive and passion to take his art where
he wanted it to go. He painted from the heart. I also admire Dickerson for
his depth and sharp, strong lines and shading. There is always something
more implied in his work.”
All
of Jodie’s paintings are inspired by her own life and the lives of the women
around her. She works to capture an emotion, a moment or a
thought on the canvas and is always pleased when people recognize this in
her paintings.
Jodie’s artworks features on a number of greeting cards, bookmarks and gift
tags sold throughout Australia and her images also grace the canisters of a
range of tea blends from her company, She-Tea. (
