Heather Brewster paints to the beat of her own emotions, personal
discovery and adventure, as well as the music that plays in the background
that helps transport her to another place.
Her acrylic paintings range in subject matter from light-hearted and
humorous to a more serious, spiritual nature. As in the series of her
camouflaged women, which represent the struggle between hiding and emerging,
the women all wear a cloak or veil that has a similar color and pattern to
the background. This indicates an invisible quality, but yet their emerging
beauty and spirit is captivating, making them stand out. Heather explains,
“In
the process of painting these women, I have discovered the comfort and
safety of hiding, but yet know how important it is to step out into the
light and expose your true self.”
“Palette Paintings” are her signature work. They are unique paintings she
has created from recycling her old palettes. She studies the dried up
mixture until an image emerges and then enhances with paint to bring it out.
“Similar to looking at the clouds and seeing images,” Brewster says. These
paintings usually reflect a life lesson or metaphor.
In her current “Scratchboard” series, Heather uses a subtractive method,
where she scratches through the thin layer of paint on the surface to reveal
the image below.
Heather has never experienced a
“creative block”, in fact, she explains that her creative thoughts and ideas
are ever flowing, perhaps channelled from a higher place. Her only concern
is that she will run out of time before she can explore them all.
Raised in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Heather moved to Calgary to attend the
Alberta College of Art. She is inspired by the untold stories revealed on
the faces of people around her, the pin-pricks of her daily experiences and
the textures and patterns of the urban landscape.

“Striking” was the first thought that came to mind when we discovered
Heather’s work. Thank you, Heather for “Ophelia”. She makes an outstanding
introduction to what lies within the pages of this March/April issue.
