Dip Narayan Paul developed his own style of painting through an
assimilation of traditional art forms during his childhood in India. Born in
rural West Bengal to a family of artistes, Paul inherited his artistic
legacy from his grandfather and father, both musicians of considerable
repute.
Paul’s childhood was deeply influenced by traditional potters and sculptors
in his hometown. From them he developed an interest in creative sculpture
and then learned mime. This gave him a sense of rhythm and expression,
leading to a style of painting that has assimilated all of these aesthetic
sensibilities.
Working mostly with acrylic on canvas, Paul invariably begins his pictures
with a dark background, slowly graduating to his signature translucent and
vibrant shades. His figures are bright and luminous in colour and texture;
their eyes and expressions, so typical of Indian folk painting, are dreamy
and elongated with mysticism, hinting at an eternal peace. Paul states, “My
search is for the sublime; an idealized environment that negates violence
and the ugly strife that perpetually darken our existence in the present
world.”
Deeply affected by mythology, Paul searches for an idealized beauty within
his own traditional roots. The legend of Radha and Krishna, the immortal
figures of youth and love in Indian culture inspire him and are recurrent
characters in his art. Paul’s paintings focus on an indigenous identity and
are a contemporary extension of the ideology of the neo-Indian school.
Following several group exhibitions across India, Paul had his first solo
exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kolkata in 2005. He is represented
