Growing up, DeAnne Bedier always thought she’d become an artist. Or a rock
star. But her mother swears that the first time her daughter pumped a fist
in the air it held a drawing pencil, not a guitar, and that’s the way it’s
been ever since.
DeAnne has boxes of homemade illustrated books and many creatively
characterized toilet paper people—an important artistic base for any young
artist! From the age of 15, she knew her career path would involve
commercial art and illustration. Many years later, that vision has come
true.
Originally from Saskatchewan, DeAnne followed her passion for art to the
Alberta College of Art, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Design in 2002. DeAnne now
works in Calgary pursuing her many loves: she is a full-time Art Director at
an advertising and design agency, she has a spare-time, in-house studio
practice as a mixed-media artist, and fits in illustration whenever
possible. She finds that by cutting down on sleep and extraneous meals she
even has time to hand-sculpt clay for a ceramic jewelry line, and to dabble
in some creative sewing projects including a few sets to launch in 2009. In
other words, DeAnne is guaranteed to be thinking about art this very
minute—developing an ad concept, a sketchbook idea, an illustration, canvas
painting, jewelry design or sewing project.
DeAnne’s interest is usually rooted in vintage style and aesthetics.
Wallpapers, textiles, floral patterns and 1940’s pin-ups were the primary
inspiration for the series of paintings featured on this issue’s cover. The
“Calendar Girls” is a limited edition giclée reproduction series of 100.
Like many of her art pieces, this series expresses her creative voice
through the use of layers, mixed media, acrylic and ink. DeAnne is also
developing a new body of work as an extension of her “Calendar Girls” series
of ladies with more of a raw edge and sketchbook-like approach.
Watch for DeAnne in upcoming art shows in 2009, displaying new art and
ceramic work as well as the limited edition “Calendar Girls”. You can find

“As a huge fan of the famous Varga Girls, showcasing DeAnne’s ‘Calendar
Girls’ on our cover brings me back to the roots of what put me in the path
to become an artist myself. Thanks for the memories DeAnne.”
