What is Microdermabrasion?

By RWM

Remember when you were a teenager and you had horrible acne? Later, once all the spots cleared up, were you left with scaring? How about now as an adult, is your facial skin textured, dull and lifeless? Are minor wrinkles and lines becoming a major problem? Well, help is now here in the form of a safe and effective cosmetic treatment!

Microdermabrasion is a new treatment to North America in the world of non-evasive cosmetic surgery. It is tooted as the quickest way to remove dead skin, oils and dirt that cause clogged pores, and the results are fresh, vibrant, younger looking skin. It is sometimes called “lunchtime cosmetic surgery” as the procedure is quick and without side effects that may accompany other beauty techniques. Microdermabrasion helps to reduce the signs of acne scars, enlarged pores, discolouration, and has a dramatic effect on fine lines and age spots from around the eyes, lips and neck.

The Microdermabrasion procedure is a unique technique that uses a hand-held device to blast a fine jet spray of mineral crystals against the skin. The crystals abrade the skin gently and evenly, removing any dead skin cell and dirt. Then the debris is vacuumed away, leaving the skin completely clean. The procedure stimulates blood flow and collagen production to the treated skin, allowing for a smoother, healthier appearance.

Unlike chemical peels and laser resurfacing, Microderm-abrasion leaves little to no redness on treated skin. Depending on the aggressiveness of the treatment, there may be some peeling of the skin. Still, there is no healing time and patients can return to full activity straight away. Make-up can even be applied immediately after the treatment, although it is recommended to use a moisturizer as a base first. Plus, it is suggested that you use a strong sunscreen (SPF 30) or avoid the sun after the treatment.

One Microdermabrasion treatment itself takes only 30 to 45 minutes, making it easy to do even on your busiest days.

As with most beauty treatments, cosmetic or otherwise, upkeep is important. While one treatment can give you dramatic results, it will take several visits to achieve the best results. Depending on your skin condition and the amount of repair required, it would take anywhere from three to twelve visits, spaced roughly one week apart, to get the look you want. Microdermabrasion is affordable compared to other cosmetic treatments making it a little more practical for any budget.

Like most cosmetic procedures, Microdermabrasion is not limited to mature women; men and women of all ages can benefit from it. Still, it is important to remain realistic. Deep acne scaring and more mature lines and wrinkles may not be completely removed, even with repeated treatments. All in all, if you are not satisfied with what Mother Nature has blessed you with, this is a practical alternative to give you a fresh, new face to meet the world with.        RWM
