Essential Fatty Acids -
The Importance in Our Family's Health
By Martine Carlina owner of the Hemp Management Group
Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are necessary to the proper
functioning of the body. Out of a number of essential fats that our body produces,
two are not made in the body and must be supplemented through the diet. They are called
omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These EFAs are essential to the proper functioning
of our cells, hormones, and neurotransmitters and are found in oils high in
polyunsaturated fat.
Symptoms of EFA deficiency in adults can include PMS, diabetes,
arthritis, skin disorders such as psoriasis and eczema, high cholesterol, impaired wound
healing, cardiovascular disease and obesity. In children, EFA deficiency can manifest
itself in allergies, skin disorders, dry skin, brittle nails, hyperactivity, impaired
brain function, and acne.
These essential fats are found in hemp and flaxseed oils, and may be
better known in fish oils. Although fish and flax oils are an excellent source of omega-3
fatty acids, hempseed oil contains the perfect balance of omega-6 to omega-3 in a 3:1
ratio, and is ideal for long-term use. There has been much research in recent years about
the importance of receiving a balance of essential fats and hemp, as a single oil, is the
most balanced on the market.
Hemp also contains rare gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which is not found
in flaxseed oil. GLA is made naturally in the body by a metabolic conversion of the
essential fat omega-6, however in many women this conversion is impaired. This can
manifest itself in the form of PMS and difficult menopausal symptoms. Women with a
deficiency in blood GLA could experience breast pain prior to their period and is also
found to play a role in other symptoms of PMS, including depression and irritability. As
there are many varieties of hemp available on the market, it is important to find a brand
that is standardized with a high GLA content. If you are taking flax and primrose or
borage oil, you could simplify your regime with hemp.
Many people who are struggling with their weight are afraid to
supplement with an oil. Our fear of fat over the past 30 years has caused many of us to
eliminate fat entirely from our diets. This practice has literally starved our bodies of
the good fats that our cells and brain require for proper functioning. An oil supplement
high in polyunsaturated fat is essential, and even helps to lose unwanted pounds by
increases our metabolism.
Once you reduce your intake of hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated
fats and start supplementing with essential fats, you will be amazed at how your body will
respond. Windows to your health will rush open as you fill the void your body has needed
all this time. The omega-3 will help to keep your cells clear of plaque, helping to absorb
nutrients. Clear cells will be able to complete their job of expelling dangerous toxins
for removal from the body. Once you begin incorporating these good fats into your diet,
you will find that your craving for empty carbohydrates is minimized. Once you get away
from the high carbohydrate, low or no fat diet and incorporate healthy fats, you will find
that your body stops storing excessive sugar, which promotes high insulin levels. Omega-3
will also feed your brain, which is entirely made of fat, helping to make sure those
neurons are firing properly.
Kids will get a special benefit from these essential fats because as
they grow, their body is growing cells at a much higher rate than adults. Essential fats
are key to the development of healthy cells as they are composed of these fats. Essential
fat deficiency has also been linked to hyperactivity, ADD and ADHD.
Hemp can help provide the body with the essential fats it requires and
can be easily incorporated in the diet. Hempseed can be cold pressed producing a delicious
nutty tasting oil, or shelled which tastes similar to sunflower seeds and looks like a
sesame seed. The shelled seed also contains up to 40% protein. Whatever form you choose,
hemp is a delicious addition to any meal and can be used in a variety of ways by everyone
in the family. Pass the hemp please!
